Default foam filled standard tank

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I am fitting a swirl pot to stop surge and also so i dont have to run near half a tank on circuit.

thinking some foam may slow fuel movement fron side to side, making the car more stable when quick change of direction...

where to buy, if its worth doing and ok for standard tank. I still want to use standard fuel level sender too.

stew

I've not looked into this but thinking out loud, the fuel level sender uses a float, so not sure how that'd work if you fill the tank full of foam?

Does it defeat the object of using foam if it's no-where near the pump/sender?

In my head I imagine the foam filling the whole of the petrol tank to stop it slushing around on corners - I've never looked into it or used it so could be wrong.

Better thing might be to cut standard tank open and plastic weld in some baffles? Not 100% if it's safe to plastic weld a petrol tank??!!

On our alfa 33 race car we have the standard tank cut in half with a swirl pot.
Maybe this could be an option to you ?

we fill the tank (holds 20ltrs) and that does a 20min race.

with only having 20ltrs in half the size of a normal tank i wouldnt say that it would affect the change of direction that much tbh.

Fair play, however bunging in some foam sounds a lot more simple. Can a tank be cut/shut diy?

Metal tank could easily be done. Plastic would need some plastic welding skills.

I've never looked into this before but I can't see why not? The only difficulty you might have is getting a tight enough fit around the pump without blocking it.

Sounds like the ultimate way to go is a custom tank setup? With an inbuilt swirl pot, pump, baffles etc. ?

When you think that a swirl pot is c.£50, bosch pump £100ish, new lines, fitting, foam to fill etc. I'd bet you're knocking on the door of £300-£500.

When looking at it like that it might be worth looking into a 'custom' tank with it all built in?

You could put the level sender float in a pipe with a gap top and bottom.

was thinking of putting foam in mine , as i had fuel surge even with half a tank .
I would go for a single big piece on the right side of the tank , but couldn't find the proper material in Greece and also couldn't justify the cost of purchasing off Demon Tweeks , too costly to ship over .

On the other hand thought ,
When i compared my fuel tank to an old one off an S2 rallye i noticed that the plastic housing that acts like a bafle around the fuel pump had "opened " up a little! maybe it is just a matter of spot plastic welding the original baffles

i have made a swirl pot ,
haven't tested it yet as we haven't finished with the car yet

will try and get a picture of the inside of the tank to show what i mean of original baffle

my car suffered from fuel surgeon continuous right cornering up to 270 degrees

There is an abundance of aftermarket tanks out there which will suit your need.
I think you are asking for trouble by looking at this as an option.

Fitting the swirl pot in the first instance would certainly help.

How did Time Attack go?

Fit the fuel pump, filter and swirl pot and the surge problem goes away. No issue and no need for foam. You don't want small particles getting sucked into your new pump!

Unless you're doing rockingham (the wrong way round) you'll not have a problem.

Simples!
