well in my terms, stops heat escaping into the engine bay, keeps gases from escaping creating a little more pressure?
Kam Racing states:
Exhaust heat wraps help increase horsepower while reducing radiant heat damage. Wrapping your exhaust system retains hotter gasses, decreasing the density and allowing the exhaust gas to exit the system faster! Greater exhaust scavenging lowers the intake temperatures and gives you more horsepower.
Exhaust heat Wrap products are generally comprised of fibreglass, which protects against 537.8°C (1000°F) of continuous direct heat. Fibreglass heat wrap can have special coatings applied to it such as "Vermiculite" which allows the glass to take 1200°F of continuous direct contact. The 1093.3°C (2000°F) bench mark is the maximum temperature glass products can withstand for 3 seconds;anything beyond that temperature or period will damage the heat wrap. Exhaust heat wrap can be fastened with high temperature cable ties, hose clamps, or lock-wire

Once wrapped make sure you seal it with the correct high temp silicone spray!
This not only slows down it rotting but also to stop oil soaking in which can catch fire in extreme circumstances

Maybe it does. But there are better ways of saying that without being an arse about it.
