Default 1998 106 GTi Restoration-OEM

Hi guys,

hope you are all well. Great website you all have here and it seems alot busier than the website dedicated to 106's?

Seeing as the cars are similar I thought I would try and get in on the fun a bit over here and post my 106 GTI project. After seeing Willsys AX and 309 threads it seems there are a few of you on here that like to read about the standard stuff as well.

My car life has seen me spend the last 12 years playing with Escorts-Mk1, mk2 and RS Turbo's. However, in the last year my old man and myself have got into trackdays and have been using a 1.4 106 Quiksilver as the basis. It's battered but we have gone through it mechanically and its a great laugh

In the household at the moment are a mk1 Escort project(7 years and counting!), a 63 plate Zetec s that the good half uses for work and the 106 Quiksilver for trackdays. Unfortunatly I have to use the 106 as a daily to work(estate agent!) which with it's stripped out interior, harnesses and battered looks is a bit embarrasing for a 29 year old in a suit....

So recently I have started to look for a new 106 to build up ready to be my new daily later in the year. I want a standard car in a good "mature" colour that will be protected well for being out in all weathers. The only "modifications" will be a bit of suspension uprating. I really wanted a P plate for the retro key code immobiliser but settled on this 1998 R reg in Diablo red.

I spotted the car within the first hour of it being listed and being local, arranged to go and view it the next morning. I met the sellers dad who informed me it had been sat for about a year after the MOT and tax had ran out. The lad had taken the front wings etc off to weld the inner wings and then proceeded to pop the headgasket as he hadnt reconnected the fans... The shell condition however seemed generally very good and the interior was in good condition though very dirty. I offered him £400 there and then and didnt hear anything back from the son so I was quite smug when I went to collect the car a week later, having won the auction for £255....

Anyway, enough waffle, I know you all like pictures..

Engine bay will see the intial work. I want to re do the welding, re paint the inner wings as the previous owner really didnt do a good job, go through all the mechanicals and get the front end bolted back on properly.

nice paintwork...

Interior simply wants a good deep clean, standard head unit fitting and a scuff man on the drivers bolster. Love the earlier dials

Rear wiper, standard decal, badges and standard dealer plate will go back on at the back. Car will be seeing paint in a few areas as well!

Dent man will see some action..

Anyway, I want to get my head down with this and have it on the road for September/October time. The engine bay has been stripped so that I can crack on with the engine bay.

First work will be to sort out the inner wings. Cleaned them up to see the state of play...

Hmmmm this looks a quality repair!

Gave it a quick whizz over to find a plate welded in by a blind child-it literally just pulled off!

My aim for this week is to get this side wing welded up and into primer ready to start the other side.

Hopefully have an update soon.

Kind regards

Danny

Great start, always nice to see someone turn a tired old car back to it's former glory. Love the colour.

Well I've been chipping away after work each night to meet my first weekly target and I've been successful with a day to spare! I've got the front inner wing welded up and into primer

First up I cut the rotten bits out and butt welded in repair pieces.

After that I had a session flushing the welds. Not turned out too bad for a quick job.

Finally it's been hit with some etch and then high build primer to meet this weeks aim.

Going to push myself a bit harder with this weeks aims I think.

)re-apply seam sealer to panel joints
)top coat inner wing
)paint under arch body colour
)bolt outer wing on

Update next week

Welcome to the forum, as you've seen already I love a good resto project so I'll look forward to seeing more updates :-)

Very good progress so far, especially nice to see the extra effort of doing a proper nice welding repair too. I have a real thing against simple 'it'll do' MOT passable repairs.

It'll be good to see a progress thread/blog of the escort too :-)

Thanks for your comments Willsy, much appreciated. It's hard on the welding front as I would hate to knock anyone for picking a welder up and giving it a go as it's the only way to learn. However, practice on scrap metal before setting yourself loose on your "pride and joy".

Anyway, back to the task in hand. I was going to wait untill next weekend for an update but something has reared it's head in the mean time which has needed addressing.

I paid alot of attention to the chassis leg to inner wing join on this car before bidding on it. I felt confident that I was catching the car just in time before surface rust converted into pure "rot".

There were a few blebs as well but these didnt crunch at all under thumb pressure .

However, a pass over with the wire wheel attachment on the grinder and....

Bugger

Still, jumped straight on it as if I didnt do it there and then I knew my motivation would take a hit..

Butt welded plate as usual..

Then the fun bit of grinding down the welds

Also welded up a little hole that appeared down the bottom.

Finished everything off with this stuff. The best rust converter by miles-I've always been disapointed by the Hammerite Kurust stuff but this stuff is highly recomended.

So thats currently doing it's thing and I can crack back on with my list tommorrow.

Meanwhile we booked our next track day at Cadwell today for June.

More soon....

Evening all

Managed to have a good day on the car today, been great this weather hasn't it!

I've managed to get my weeks aims completed but with 1 backward step. More on that in a mo...

First up, after the bilt hamber had done it's thing, a healthy coat of etch primer followed by seam sealing all the joins.

Under the arch got a fews coats of paint..

finished off with the inner. Got a great finish, no runs, bugs, dust or reactions but can anyone see whats wrong?

I don't know if it's the wrong colour primer or just a rubbish mix of Halfords paint but the colour is miles off???

Still, not the end of the world is it. No point getting annoyed so I'll leave that to fully harden for a couple of weeks before knocking it back and trying again. Think i'll get some proper kit mixed up by the local paint supplier this time.

In the meantime, time to start on the o/s.....

catch you all soon.

Wow, the rear of that gold one holy shit!

Even I managed to make a replacement exhaust hangar for my car when it snapped off. box section is my next target.

But since mine is Saxo it's not worth as much as my Rallye

Ha, thanks guys, the rear of the gold one certainly needs some work but it's only metal

I'm after a standard intake/resonator box for the red GTI. I have the airbox itself and all the pipework but I'm missing the bit circled.

If anyone can help me out with one in good nick(ie no mounting lugs missing or deep scratches) then please drop me a pm.

Kind regards

Daniel
