Use some of that orange action multi purpose cleaner - you can buy it from Tesco, Asda etc. It works a treat getting the muck off the engine.
When I hosed down my VTR engine, I didn't cover any parts up but I didn't drown the engine in water either, but it was totally fine. I'd like cover the battery like you said and make sure the ECU is covered enough - I reckon you'll be ok with that just don't soak the wires in water etc.

I know the 8v Rocker Covers are pretty easy to remove, by just taking out a few bottles and looking at the VTS cover I reckon they are same. I'm sure u'll be fine mate, just take it slow to make it's ok.

I just used some 'back to black' stuff on the black plastic and nabbed one of my mothers nice towels to rub off dirt and grime from round the engine bay.
job done.

heres the guide on polished bliss for safely cleaning your bay
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acata...es_engine.html
theres a sticky at the top of this section
i found wd40 to be goon on the black plastic parts in the bay too
as for the rocker cover there a lot easier on the 16v ones than the 8v ones, to polish them up have a search on it am sure its been covered before, are you wanting to paint them or polish them up??

cover any electrical terminals or connections in tin foil pal. then some engine degreaser or orange multiaction as mentioned above does the same job lol.
i found back-to-black horrid on the plastics though, use WD-40 instead it brings it up a treat!
