personally I think you should stick to the 1600cc engine for now. You have a plan of where you want to use it.
I'm only fitting a 1.8 to my racecar to meet race regs but it will still be fast and fun

Yes but what would be the point in sticking to a 1600 when you can just go all out and do an 1800+ conversion. Do it once and do it right I say! As say Craig opted for the Vtec lumps and at a later date he wanted to go VAG, you may as well just rip everything out and start again - and the point in that is?
I'd go what Maxwell has said, and I said that from the start. Go for a 1.8, preferably a VAG engine, tuning potenital is much higher for a start and will be less expensive in the long run. Plus these engines are pretty bullet proof and right up there with the Japs  .

my mate has a 1.8t golf gti mk4 and we are mounting an FMIC tonight, so i will bring out the measuring tape and measure height - from sump to cam cover and width - timing cover to clutch and then breadth - inlet to exhaust! and then will get back to you

Stick to Vtec.
Sack of this VAG lump idea.
Need to keep it fairly light and revvy.
It's like putting an uber heavy GTi-6 or equivalent block in a light/trackspec 205.
Destroys the handling and what they car is really about.
(Obviously IMO)
Unless you want a Saxo that can only go in a straight line.
Which in turn defeats the entire point of a Saxo.
In a nutshell - Keep it around 1600 and Vtec.
I demand you!

Just measured my mates car:
width - 36" (alternator pulley to gearbox mount)
breadth - 28" (inlet manifold to exhaust heat sheild)
height - 30" (sump to engine cover)
so get measuring ya cunt

There is a 1.8T'd Clio Ph2, They have tiny engine bays so space shouldn't be a problem in a Saxo.

I still feel the B18C is worth it for all the time/£££. You will soon get bored of the drag racing and want to stick it on track. Thats when you will question why you ever went B16..
VAG engine would be nice as it would allow huge power. But huge power isnt the be all and end all!

hence the class (group a) and stuff getting mentioned
id still go vtec craig
get an imported motor and box with lsd and have fun lol

tbh which ever you go for its going to scream when you plant your foot but i dont know i think i would be tempted for the 1.8t because of the fact it could go to a crazy bhp easy ish but then if you want a drag car and you want a group a one then the same engine its got to be but how long will it keep you entertained going along one strip?

i agree ferg..
if you want to drag race buy a dodge charger or something american and v8..
if you build this car it should (imo) be more track bias'd with gheylining in mind not other way round.
