Good morning,

a little story and progress thread of our budget track car before anything gets too serious, its a 1.4 16v 105bhp of pure terror (slowest car i've ever owned)

we bought it for £300 off a friend who has a turbo'd metro which is mental (he buys cars then breaks them)

anyway it come with nice green painted drums and rocker cover to match. that must add a couple of scene points!?

its clearly had a quarter replaced, o/s door and front bumper so its had a bump

but its a track car and a cheap one at that

the power unit

interior stripped

Side shot

Rust treatment

this is a budget track car build, i've never been on track and this is gonna be a cheap way of doing it, me and a friend went half on it (we both work in the same place so we get the same amount of time on it)

so its stripped out, has zr 160 calipers on it with some cobra bucket seats

its on apex lowering springs and zr 160 dampers too

we have side skirts to put on

its gonna be driven with the 1.4 engine until it detonates or till next winter, then it will be getting a 160 engine or a k turbo engine (no heavy t series kthx)

more pics

just needs abit more sound deadening out and some harnesses and we can book our first track day

We have seats and bigger discs and pads on now

Discs are pagid discs, with yellow stuff pads

While the dash was out we took out some wires that we didn't need anymore (head unit and airbag wiring, no lights on dash and it still runs)

we're keeping it budget, all we need now is a set of harnesses if anyone can point me in the right direction for them or know someone who's selling some would be much appreciated!

Doesn't look a bad base for a track car, was considering one of these before I ended up with my vtr

My mrs used to have a gen 2, I feel for you with that engine but fm it was real good fun to drive!
Get some practice in at doing head gaskets is my only advice
Seriously though, as much as people give them engines shit for hgf they're cracking engines and simple to work on too, only thing I don't like is where the thermostat is situated! Right on the back of the engine and you gotta get the inlets off for good access.

Looks good this, the 1400 k might feel a little slow in these but the handling on them shines I don't think it will disappoint on track. With some money spent you can see 130bhp or more from the 1.4, though the routes you have suggested for more power will be cheaper and easier. A set of Vvc exhaust cams can give a nice boost in horsepower and torque for hardly any money at all too!
I'd make sure the cooling system is in top notch condition and fit a PRT and a new inlet gasket before thrashing it round a track, guess that way at least a potential head gasket failure situation may be avoided for relatively little outlay.
Other than the gaskets being an issue they don't really suffer from many other problems, easy on oil consumption, nice and revvy in the lower capacity engines and simple to work on - I rate them very highly indeed
