Default

When the laptop boots, it should say press esc for grub. When you get to the menu, select recovery. it should boot to a cmd prompt, if you know the username type

"passwd grant" without the quotes (grant is just an example)

and it will ask for new password

If not, you can create a new user.

"adduser grant" without the quotes.

then do as it says (if unsure just press enter for the default setting) All thats important is your name and password really.

There is an admin login, known as "root" but this is not enabled by default on ubuntu, and you'd still need to know the root password.
