10,000 RPM HDD's...
is it worth paying over the odds for a 10k RPM HDD
when a 7,200 RPM HDD is much much cheaper?
Anyone able to comment on this?
x Much love.

Assuming your thinking of the WD Raptor drives, iv debated many times whether to get one or not & still never managed to convince myself its worth the cash.
You could get like 2x 120gb drives for the price of a 74gb raptor & then run them in RAID 0, or go even more exreme & run several identical small drives in RAID 0.
I'd try the RAID 0 path before i forked out for a noisy, expensive, small drive tbh.

You will only really notice a different if the rest of your machine is quick too. So no I doubt you will even notice a difference.

Never realised the Raptor came in 150gb acctually so thats not too bad & with all that RAM it might acctually be worth it, long as you keep the PC clean & dont use Internet explorer it should run pretty well i'd imagine.

yeah man, I'd be rocking with Firefox blatantly.
Mystic,
as your in this thread.
Do I go with the hassle of buying 64 bit Vista Home premium
or the 32 bit version?

No idea mate, dont know the first thing about vista, once this pc expires im all mac & linux
Is it not to do with the processor being 32 or 64 bit? I built a system for a mate last year & used a 64bit processor even though he would be using 32bit XP untill vista came out (i assumed vista was just gonna be 64bit )

Vista has the option,
you can buy 32 bit or 64 bit,
Might just buy 32 bit to avoid complications with software and drivers...

Mmm, same as XP then, well unless someone else on here can give you any help with it, i spose you could read up a bit on wiki etc whether its gonna be worth going 64bit. 32bit would be my safe bet too though, rather the devil you know...
Anyway i need to nip off to halfords and get an 11mm brake hose spanner thing *sigh*

64bit Vista is perfectly fine, all the drivers avaliable for 32 are generally also avaliable in 64bit version.
As for the HDD, If your prepared to spend extra cash for faster RPM but smaller size then why not try it? They are cheap enough to replace if your not happy with it.
Ive got a 320gb Seagate Barracuda cost me £40 although im convinced its making a high pitched whining noise still!!!!

You want 64bit Vista, you have a directx 10 card, may as well use it!
I would pick RAID 7k drives over a single 10k drive any day, just make sure the drives have a good buffer, seagate's ftw.
Maxtors use to be better, but they are so bloody loud!

have you installed the client software on the workstations?
and you need the server software on your machine...
Install VNC on the workstations too.

Best thing ive ever bought....
I run windows and certain programs i use alot from the 10k beast. Made a real difference. Well worth the money if you're impatient but not a mega difference.
If you want sheer speed then get i-ram... everything loads instantly.

specc'd up a machine for myself,
comes to around 1k,
is the spec above,
in a nice case with a nice powersupply.
Im guessing i-ram is expensive.
