i have just bought a vtr x reg 2001 model. the clocks have 165k on : ( but the guy assured me the engine has been changed with only 45 on it. it ticks over nicely runs smooth and pulls well but what should i be looking for to make sure as the rocker cover looks a bit battered ??? please help

I would be more worried for rust

what do you mean the rocker cover looks battered? Is it dented up or just rusty looking?

as said, the engine is the part you need to be least worried about. I'd be more concerned about the shell having rust, the beam and gearbox

If the Rear wheels have very noticable negative ( / - \ ) from behind then thats the axle, gearbox whines and crunches, rust, common places are infront of the washer bottle fill up and inside the arches, rusty rocker cover aint a problem, they are easily available in the for sale section...
