new laptops almost always have hdmi output, at the very least DVI vga is very outdated.
VGA
DVI
HDMI
Check which one you have then have a look on ebay for a cable

I have vga and svideo, but as my flat screen is mounted on the wall i dont think i will be able to get a vga lead in the back and get it back on the wall but the svideo is on the side so will give that a try, will the picture be good this way?

that would be because VGA is not a digital signal like HDMI so does not work, my brother got conned with a similar cable from ebay!
OP.
i have never used s-video before so im not sure how the tv would pick up the signal, i am guessing it is possible, however the picture will most likely be not brilliant.
certainly not to the extent that most of us are now used to watching any form of media.

The picture won't be great at all I'm afraid. To give you an idea it will look like those pirate DVDs unless you can stream in HD, which you will lose anyway if you run it through a video cable.

You need to know what your telly will handle too.
DVI, VGA and S-Video don't carry sound, HDMI does.
DVI-D will convert to HDMI as its digital.
VGA and DVI-A are analog.
DVI-I will do analogue and digital.
There are 3 main types of DVI, make sure you pick the right one.
