Its not a bad wheelbase but a combination of high centre of gravity, then when converted..poor suspension and poor weight distribution

I think there was either a FWD or an AWD motorbike. Cant remember if it was a concept or made it to production but its years old.

no not if you accept you will have no rear seats
I will even tell you the perfect unit to use

an old audi 100 2.7 litrev6 engine + box +subframe etc
will fit behind the seats is about 20bhp in cooking form--drop a blower of your choice and get 400very relaible and still use it as an everyday drive
that way the weight will be truly in the middle and it will handle --
there a project for you --no special bits neede just £100 to buy an old audi --tyoe that has the transaxle type g/box with engine infront of it --or I suppose even a passat diesel, and drop a cupra r/vw turbo lump engine in there istead if you want to be different --fits directly to the box
now who says i only go on about s/c and don,t look at all possibilites..
once you have the transaxle in you pick the power unit you like --maybe even a saxo one

I think the same (or similar) box is used in the Audi 80, and will bolt up to XU engines. Certainly was used in an old kit car that was Mi16 powered.

I still believe given a certain power level FWD is best
Caterham, Elise, Westfields...

So many variables to take into account, the main reason hot hatches exist is because their primary reason is to be a cheap, small, practical day to day car.

If everything was about pure speed, hatchbacks probably wouldn’t exist.

Quote:
The hot Megane's for example the R26R was faster than the old M3 round the Nurburgring and that had how much power?
The E46 M3 was 1549KG and designed for comfort and daily driveability with full leather interior, road tires and a lot of mod cons.

The special version of the megane (R26.r) was designed for one purpose, to be the quickest FWD at the nurburgring whilst retaining the ability to be sold as a road going car.

Although it is 114bhp down on the M3 it is also 319KG lighter, and has a chassis tuned to be able to tackle the ring, as well as having a buckets and harness’, poly-carbs, semi slicks, cage, and no AC / radio.

Note: When BMW released their special version of the E46 M3 (the CSL)on semi slicks with full interior & mod cons it completed a lap in 7:50 – 27 seconds quicker than the R26.r, and 5 years before the R26.r existed – which makes the initial quote invalid.

even if we take the Megane RS265: 7 years in technological advancement, and the worlds quickest FWD production car still slower than the old M3.

Quote:
Hell in 5 years we will probably have 500bhp FWD cars outperforming the RWD/
You’ve forgotten one thing – Just because quick FWD cars are being developed doesn’t mean that quick RWD cars have stopped being developed.

FWD cars will get faster no doubt, but RWD will also be developed to go quicker too...

Quote:
In my experience the back end on a RWD tends to let go before the back goes on a FWD but then my RWD knowledge is mainly from other people's cars as the only thing RWD i drive is a lorry lol
So, actually you don’t have experience driving RWD cars then do you...

Quote:
All i can say is that i know of no performance cars (except that elan) that were designed from the ground up in fwd if given a choice
100% true.

Of show room spec cars; there are 91 official lap times round the ‘ring before you see an FWD car on the list.

Quote:
Rewarding is the best word i can think of
Again, I fully agree.

By my own admission I’m probably not much quicker if at all in the BMW compared to the saxo, for the simple reason it’s far easier to have confidence in a FWD car. But oh gawd does it feel better when you string a few corners quickly in a RWD wagon. Of all the RWD / FWD car’s i’ve been in - The steering, balance, braking, and driveability just IS better with RWD.

Quote:
What RWD cars get better times than the GTR on the ring and other circuits?
Radical SR8 LM
Radical SR8
Gumpert Apollo
Dodge Viper ACR
Lexus LFA ‘ring edition
Donkervoort D8 RS
Porche 911 GT2 RS
Chevvy C6 ZR1
Chevvy C6 Z06

Quote:
Zonda F
Nope, it’s 2 seconds slower than the latest GTR time.

And the GTR’s 7:22 time was in damp conditions too.

Epic LOL.

Isn't it funny how the only people who're claiming FWD is better than RWD are the ones who haven't driven/owned RWD. Just sayin'.

Maybe they thought it was so good they didn't bother changing?

Once you have genuinly mastered FWD then move to RWD. Doubt anyone on here is a true master of FWD

If that was the 'rule' the majority of the world would still own FWD cars.

luckily it's not, and people get the privilage of driving something proper with a proper drivetrain.

cheeky young whippersnapper !!!!!

late 60,s was when i first drove a car legally
I think a whole host of championship wins qualifies as knowing how to drive FWD, add to that a good few rally+ auto class wins+ championships in evrything from a turbo charged hillman imp + mk1 bda escorts says i can drive high performance RWD cars --
and real cars ones without any sort of traction control ,ABS ,ESP and all the other shite that you have on modern cars .
.
a driver is a driver and no matter what end the power is at if he,s got the skill he can drive it

There was an AWD bike. The front wheel had a different mech to turn at a different speed to the rear (else it would fall over when turning).

It also had wheels with covers as it was designed for all terrain/bogs etc... US milatry used them initially I believe.
