I reckon if general chat didn't add to your post count or maybe added less...i.e 1 for every 10 posts then there would be a lot less spam and other bullshit.

I'm thinking it would have reverse effect? People would spam more if they knew they had to do more posting for a post count? I could be wrong, but I reckon it could go that way as well.

I agree to an extent but there is a lot more abuse of new members than is needed.
A lot of new saxo owners are going to be teenagers so instant abuse (or banter as some call it) is either going to create an arguement or make the new member never come back which is against the point of the forum really.
