nikon d40 - new question post 9
i've just ordered myself a Nikon D40 for christmas. (my first camera )
i'm looking at getting a memory card for it as i dont think it comes with one?
is the d40 compatible with SDHC?
all i can find on the internet just says SD card and amazon says check to make sure the camera is compatible with SDHC as some aren’t.
would this one be ok?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Fla...8159739&sr=8-2
just want to make sure before i order as i dont want to be disappointed on christmas day.
if someone could explain what the different types of memory cards are that would help me understand.
whats a flash card for example? and what can i use in my D40?
cheers
curran

I expect the nikon uses Compact flash cards.
they are the largest of all.

Lozacorsa is correct it does accept SDHC.
As for the different kinds of cards its generaly the shape so a compact flash card is much bigger than an SD card, etc, etc. So you must get an SD for it to fit your camera. As for SDHC it is an SD High Capacity card, as in its bigger, so all SDHC tend to be 4 or 8GB etc.
The only other thing to look out for if you are a bit of a camera nut is the speed of the SD card (its read / write rate). The card write time will effectively slow the continuous rate your camera can run at so go for a faster write rate.
Recommendations are the Extreme 3 or Extreme 4 by Sandisk. Buy from a reputable dealer as many import cards are fake!

On the canon's it's called 'LiveView'
But its generally not a great idea to use it all the time.

Single Lens Reflex
live view is only a new addition, so i wouldnt expect to have it on the d40.
Its also shit for 90% of stuff, should be shooting properly and using the cup anyway. It makes me LOL so much when people try taking pics on slrs holding it up as if the screen has the image on lol

Autofocus is generally the biggest problem when using the liveview because the AF sensors are all up in top of the camera near the viewfinder area. But as Liveview displays a picture from the what the image sensor actually see's it has to lower the mirror again so the AF sensors can operate...
So it's not a straight forward system... The idea with SLR's it that they're 'TTL' Cameras, which means 'Through The Lens' i.e. you see in the viewfinder through the lens itself. Small compacts may have a viewfinder but it's not looking through the lens, it'll just be some crappy optics near the lens.

oh right, thanks for explaining.
i did notice that the view finder was a lot better than any of the other compact camera's i have used.
feels a bit strange holding it up to my face though since i've only ever used compact cameras before.
i've got so much to learn.
