Bin the PS?
Had the MOT and steering rack knock came up as an advisory.
Need to investigate more but was just thinking if it is the rack thats gone if it would be worth putting in a non-ps one.
Anyone know how much all the PS equip weighs?

we was on about this other day forgot what thread, but from what i been told, its onli the 1.1's with no pas, and the whole pedal box set up is different, so best thing to do is just block it up with someting, but make sure its fully drained 1st

Power steering major over rated in track cars, not needed at all.

better to just strip the pas rack and block the ports up with some big bolts and rubber "o" rings to get it through the next mot. the pas rack is also faster than the none pas rack even when its stripped.

Yep. This is the thing to do.
Dont buy a Non PAS rack they are geared higher and the wheels then hit the inner arches (on VT* models) as they have more turns lock to lock.
I keep my PAS as it "dampens" out bump steer.

Ah, so it's best to keep the rack but just strip out the pipes and pump.
@Colin, You keep yours PAS as it's mainly for rally with uneven roads etc?

Pedal box doesnt differ but column does so would need rack and colunn but as colin said the non pas rack itself is better imo
i just took the pipes of my old one didnt even bung the holes up

I have say that having converted a p/s rack to non assisted it is not that good an idea ,if you have serious power and sticky tyres ,but if you must ,then fit a non p/s rack --slightly more truns lock to lock but easier to keep hold of when you clip a kerb.
but once you get big power and sticky tyres you will be a much better driver with a p.s rack you don,t have to hang on to it ,so you can be more delicate with the inputs, thats why all rally cars have p/s theses days --funny steering geometry does not make it easy to hang on to and the best set-up for steering angles will make the steering heavier when you have lock on--just my opinion. if you are goig to do it ,then you must remove the ram completely or it will be even heavier and adead feel to it

Sorry but a saxo without power steering is the worst experience i've ever had. My PAS lines leaked and left me with no PAS so i was driving around for weeks without it. Steering 'feel' felt worse and when i did get it fixed the car felt like a GT3 RS!! There is no way you can turn a corner as quickly or as sharply without PAS.
Sure its my opinion but having driven no PAS and PAS i would say there is no question in what i would run...

As said, broken PAS is nothing like no PAS.. but i guess you've got that by now.
Non PAS saxos aren't that hard to drive, a mate let me drive his forte a couple years ago (we was on a road trip and he got tired bless him). It took about 10 minutes to get used to and it was pretty easy. But when i jumped back in my VTR the next day i really appreciated the power steering.
One thing i will say when i experienced when driving his non PAS saxo, it made me realise how much 'dry steer' i was doing back then. I didn't really realise i was doing it until i drove his non PAS. Suppose i could say it made me a better driver lol.

the difference between non pas and broken pas is the fact your pushing around a hell of a lot of fluid through pipes so you get a lot of resistance.
and its a hell of a nicer drive on the roads without pas doesn't feel as twitchy so you feel way more in control.
