lcd vs plasma

When looking into a new tele couple of months back it seems to me the same as someone else said lcd upto 37/42ish then plasmas come into their own with the bigger sizes. Then again led's beat the both hence the price tag.

i have a 17 inch lcd for my son, which is ok (not much different from a normal portable crt tbh) a 26 inch lcd in my bedroom which is only 8 months old and a brand new 42 inch plasma downstairs. you can see the quality difference straight away as soon as the screen gets bigger, and i think now i would have plasma again. i was a bit worried about all the horror stories a while ago and that put me off them at first, but in that link above it pretty much says that plasmas are better all round than lcds. having both, i would agree i do like the leds though... i think its just how thin they are that makes me want one

wouldnt surprise me, most lg tvs are samsung on the inside (i think) i know its one of the big ish makes that are made by samsung and labelled up as something else

A general rule of thumb is you get what you pay for.

Larger screens plasma is better, smaller screen you can't get plasma so LCD has to suffice.

That said a £2000 LCD would blow away a £1000 plasma.

What's your budget and screen size requirements and I'll find you a right tv

It's a sad misconception that LCDs are the way forward. Plasma TVs will still produce better quality pictures than LCDs and far better motion handling. One of the only things you wouldn't want a plasma for is a PC screen.

Plasma TVs don't suffer from input lag generally, where all LCDs do, it's in their nature. Some LCDs are worse offenders than others, namely Samsung and their newer ranges. If you intend to game on the TV, steer well clear of the new LED backlighting LCD TVs, as these have much greater input lag, making gaming a disappointing experience.

Refresh rate has been mentioned a couple of times here, and it's been mentioned incorrectly. Most TVs are 50hz/60hz compatible, which is what we want here, as standard definition broadcasts are typically 50hz. Games consoles like Xbox 360's and PS3's will send a 60hz signal, so most bases are covered. TVs which boast 100hz/200hz/600hz technology, aren't actually accepting those inputs, they use complex algorithms and "pulldown" to squeeze multiple frames into singles ones. All of these "motion enchancements" don't really cut the mustard, (except 24hz compatibility) so don't be fooled into thinking that you require a TV with them.

whatever you choose wont be 100% its own brand, every make uses different parts.

samsung make most lcd screens for all brands. panasonic are about the only ones who use all of there own parts.

sony use there own screens and most of the pcbs are there own,

bush/wharfedale/goodmans/some toshiba's/some Hitachi's/ use parts from a company in Turkey called Vestel and they are shit tbh! thats why they can make them so cheap.

if you want quality go for sony or panasonic. if you want REAL quality go for Pioneer, Loewe, B&O etc.

alot of people like samsung and for the money they are brilliant but they are made cheap and it shows on things like the audio

Samsung make some good LCDs, but not so good plasma's.

Pioneer Kuro plasma's are the real referrence sets.

Question Dave, how noticable would "input lag" be to the casual gamer though?

My old LCD TV from yonks ago, you could see mega "bluring" (motion handling) when making movements on various games. Im really impressed however by my current Toshiba LCD TV. Picture is very sharp and Ive pertty much never noticed the same bluring effect.

I agree that Plasma's didnt blur in the first place, but the gap between a good LCD and a good Plasma is so small these days.

50" or above ive been told plasma... anything below that lcd will be ideal. then its just choosing a good spec'd tv. i have a sony for lounge which im not ovally impressed with (wouldnt recommend) and have lg upstairs for gaming which i personally feel is better.

This is why I have a Pioneer 50 as my main set with a Samsung 32 LCD in the bedroom and a Panasonic 32 in the dining room. As already said, you get what you pay for!

A lot of people are brainwashed by numbers and specification. At the end of the day, the best sets are the ones with good processors and components, not a list of numbers

Ultimately, because of the way Plasma displays, like for like it will always give a better, more accurate and more natural picture than LCD.

I have a panasonic plasma and love it, its 42" I used to have a 37" samsung lcd and I like the picture on the panasonic more

Sony
Panasonic
Samsung

Just my preference though

must admit i looked at a lot of tvs when buying my one for the living room and im more than happy with my philips panel (with ambilight). Vastly better than my samsung in the other room or my friends Sony Bravia or my father in laws Sharp Aquos

I think you may be mistaking input lag for motion blur / smearing. Or maybe I haven't read your post correctly.

Input lag doesn't have any effect on the visual output of the TV, it's the time taken by the TV's processors to deal with all the information / calculations. Some take longers than others... If you were to hook up your PC to your LCD, and then simply move the mouse cursor around, input will be easily detectable as it will feel like the cursor is playing catch-up to your physical hand movements.

Casual gamers won't be affected much, but if the TV is really bad, say above 100ms of input lag, then it will be noticeable. When it comes to fast paced FPS games like Call of Duty, input lag plays a big part, as you want the movement of your crosshair to be precise and responsive. You also need to respond to certain occurances in the game as quickly as possible. If your TV is lagging around 80ms (like my Samsung LE40A656) you are at a disadvantage to others. It can also make the gaming experience less enjoyable. You can almost compare it to like driving a car with precise steering, and one which has a bit of play in the steering.

panasonic make there own pcbs and screens (for plasma) but some of the ICs they use arnt there own.

Pioneer are mint, ive got a 50" and love it, got it for a stupid price aswell!

With respect to LCD TV's I dont feel the motion blur stuff is half as bad.



From a gamers point of perspective with regards to input lag, then the choice of TV is vital! Casual gamers as I was hinting at, not soo soo bad.

Do companies provide you with response time details when you buy them? Have to say, this wasnt something I looked at when I bought my TV. But then again I rarely play online these days.
