Last weekend we went to see our old friend danny-vts, who sold us a 106 GTi interior, some black A, B and C pillars from a VTS, a full VT kit in silver and some tinted rear windows.

Progress.

Tinted side repeaters fitted.

We gave the interior carpet a good clean and glued the edges back down, before fitting the GTi leathers. The front seats are in need of repair but are only temporary until we get some buckets. The rear bench is in near immaculate condition, and will be staying in the car.

106 GTi rear bench fitted.

We also noticed that the driver’s side front seat, front left thread for the seat bolt looks to have been welded. Is this standard on Saxos? Or has this been repaired/changed?

We also finally got the rest of the alarm out.

Good luck with the wedding mate

I seen your engine in the car and fell back, then I saw the millage on it and almost passed out, how can it be that high? What's it been doing? Clocking the ring all it's life? Lol, good project though

Haha. Cheers mate. We’re not sure about the history. The car came with no paperwork at all so we’re just chancing it at the moment. The engine feels pretty solid, and from looking underneath the exhaust and rear beam look almost new. It’s just the rest of the car that needs some attention. It has been owned by the same person for the majority of its life so we’re hoping that it has been looked after. It is definitely the highest mileage Saxos I’ve ever seen though.

Mileage on a saxo wouldnt concern me, shell rot would so if its got to 185k without too much of that (seemingly would have to be consudering its on the road) id say you'd be fine. Get it to 285k! lol

There are a few patches of rust, mainly on the wings. But the shell and chassis are spot on.

After splitting the headlights to spray the inserts black, we found that the passenger side was too misaligned to ever sit properly as the bracket was broken. Rather than trying to fix it, we went to see another old friend who sold us a new set of headlights along with some replacement fog lights.

We decided against splitting and spraying the second set of headlights as we changed our approach and now want all three cars to be better matching on the wedding day. To do this we're planning to keep certain parts the same in order to tie the cars together, this includes keeping the headlights standard on all three cars.

The rear bootlid needed some attention where the paint had started to peel, and the driver's side wing had a spot of rust near the arch. So we bought some Icelandinc grey paint and filled them back in.

Nathan had finished respraying the grille, mirror caps and the rear badges.

We also picked up a genuine Magnex rear section which we polished up, removed the old rusty backbox and cut in to the standard centre section to fit the new exhaust.

Whilst dewipering the rear, something both myself and nathan have done loads of times, we managed to smash the rear window…

Thanks to Chris1357, within 24 hours of smashing the glass we had fitted a new bootlid. The only problem now is that we’re going to have to redo the rear badges.

Still can't believe I smashed that rear window.

Some big updates this weekend. Firstly Nathan has been driving all over the country picking up bits for the Icelandic. We now have two genuine OMP Strada bucket seats, along with two black door cards fitted with Alpine tweeters (thanks to jbrady72 for the door cars). We also got some new Pioneer front speakers to replace the existing broken ones. We have fitted the door cards but the OMPs will need new subframes before we can mount them in to the car.

Secondly, car number 2 has arrived. Some of you may have seen the tread posted last week about the Saxo VTS used in Gavin and Stacey. We sent a few messages to the owner, agreed a price (way over what a Saxo is worth) and picked it up on Saturday. The car is completely standard, aside from a green cotton air filer. It even has the original headunit. It’s done a mere 70k, which is banging for a 15 year old car and has a load of supporting paperwork for MOTs and services, along with some documents about it being used in Gavin and Stacey. Mechanically the car is perfect and has recently had a timing belt change. The bodywork is another story, it’s a bit rough in places and it needs a few things sorting out.

Here are a few pictures and a YouTube link of the car in the TV show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLs2ibIVQwM

We don’t want to modify the VTS too much because it will ruin its originality and devalue it as being the one from Gavin and Stacey. So the plans are to make a few reversible mods, which we can strip off again to put the car back to standard before we sell it. We’re going to tidy it up, get the dents out, refurbish the alloys, replace the broken headlight panel and remove the battered green cotton filter. Then lower it, fit a nice new air intake, upgrade the audio and fit a subtle sounding backbox.

The door cards definitely make a massive difference to the interior.

Bit of an update tonight. Pressed plates have arrived, the moodlighting LEDs are complete, we got some speaker covers for the front doors, and a window equalizer treat was delivered from China:

Fitted the pressed plates:

We also fitted some black A, B and C pillars from a VTS. Since the VTS has alarm sensors in the A pillars we needed something to fill the hole. So we mounted some LED lights and spliced in to the interior light so they came on when the doors open - excuse the dirty window, we've still not had chance to give the car a good clean:

This weekend we fitted the subframes, and the OMP Strada bucket seats. We also noticed that the GTi leather runners we used had the secret pouch on the drivers side.

They make a massive difference to the car. It does feel weird sitting so high though, but you can really throw it in to corners and you're held tight to your seat. Whilst fitting the seats, we also removed the black strips from the door pillars.

Finally, we fitted some "LED Flash Lights", also from China.

Some pictures of the LEDs at night. Straight out of Need For Speed Underground 2. 5 star rating.

Apologies for the lack of developments with Project Wedding Sax. We’ve both been either busy or away on holiday over the last couple of weeks so we’ve not had the chance to get much done. But we have some big updates are coming later this week...
