Default Jammed indicator stalk

The turn indicator stalk on my wife's Saxo has jammed in the centre position. Will not move up or down, so can't indicate left or right.
Still ok for switching lights on and off and flashing headlights. No amount of wiggling, tapping, etc. will free it.
I removed cowling above and below steering column, and found that if I remove to screws, the unit into which the stalk fits can be slid to the left in order to remove it, but it snags on the dash (brilliant).
Looks like removing the steering wheel is needed, but if I could remove the retaining bolts for the steering column, will I be able to drop it far enough for the indicator unit to be slid clear.
Has any one had this problem of the stalk jamming. Has something come adrift inside the unit causing jam?

Yeah the self cancelling plastic bit snaps off and jams it.

It should just slide out as long as you disconnect the plug first, pulling the stalk to "flash" the lights usually gives enough clearance.

But yes you can remove the 3 13mm bolts and lower the column, that'll give loats of clearance.
