I had FF, MSN, Skype and the X360 running when I tested mine, would that have made any difference?

yep .
close down all windows even programs that use the net i.e skype, msn etc etc.
then do a retest. you could get an idea then on how much your stuff uses the internet .

no it doesnt matter what you have running.
the only thing it would make a difference to is the ping i think.

yeh it does bud!
MSN is always transfering data (when you're logged in that is), any computer connected to a wireless network uses up minor amounts of internet connection speed. as it needs a certain amount of strength in the first place to actually connect via wi-fi/WLAN. if the computer is directly connected via the ethernet then its a different story.
PS3's are always constantly connected aswell as soon as you have no signal it automaticly signs you out from the playstationnetwork. which results in some 800 bla bla bla error code haha.
I.E 8 actually opens up 2 internet explorer pages. if you do CTRL+ ALT+DELETE then go to processes you will see it says iexplorer.exe twice not once. you'll be suprised how much VM/memory usage it takes up. mines at 116,125K
1. is for the main page itself the 2nd one is for the tabs you open up so of course the more tabs, the slower you're internet will become and your overall CPU .
there is one thing about internet speeds that pisses me off, which ISP dont mention and that is... say they sell you a package with 10meg bandwidth the thing is you're area where you live may only be able to aquire 8megs so you as a consumer are actually paying out more then you should be as you're not getting what you have exactly paid for!
Norway, Holland have been on fibreoptic cabling for nearly 10 years now! and its only been the past 3 maybe 4 years we are starting to have it properly installed here. first places was uni's, schools, hospitals & emergency services.
thats why you're uni connection is awesome they have a direct hook up to the main Fibre Optic HUB.
give it another 5 years and we shall have speeds as fast as the uni and it be at our home .

none of the above will change what speed is received at the household though, just how it is distributed
