Depends what you want it for really, try not to get stuck on the figures they give you online like a 3.0ghz quad chip and 4gb of ram.
For example the bus speed of a chip is very important and you only need 4gb of ram for complicated graphics applications and if youre PC is a pile of crap and cant cope.
So what do you need it for???

yeh thats the thing i probably would have gone for the most ram and memory etc the £500 would buy, but thats not a good idea?
all i really use it for is internet all the time, music, burning cd's etc.. nothing specialist really. just want something that is fast, good quality etc..

In that case stick to your good brands, HP, compaq or even dell.
Acer, advent etc, will have huge speeds and large ram but will be outperformed by the slowest buisness end HP laptops due to the architecture.
Theres always a few on the for sale section and I currently have 2 for sale myself. For what you need you dont need anything special.

not so good actually low res screen and slow fsb and cache.
Though I am selling a 17" hp! Its this one! http://www.techstore.co.uk/browse.ph...dLineID=118312
Faster FSB, better processer, hi res screen and top of the range! check out the details online and let me know if youre interested. Its £450

Again the PC world one has high speed but the processor only has 1MB of cache and a low FSB so it just cant handle enough data to run at the speed it says. (and I hate PC world)
