Default Project Modernise A Mk2 Golf!

Hey guys! This thread is copied from elsewhere so bear with me if it doesn't quite make sense...

So far, i've had 6 Mk2 Golfs. My most recent Mk2 was sold last year and instantly, i regretted it. I've always wanted another since then.

My old Mk2:

For as a long as I remember, i've wanted a proper project car! A car that I can build when I feel like it and leave alone when I don't. A car I don't have to worry about leaving in a legal state because I need it for work in the morning. Now, I have that car! I've recently moved into a new house with a decent driveway and a garage. Two weeks later and I already have my project car!

It's a 1.6 1987 Type 19. I have absolutely no history, nothing. I don't even have a log book (It came from a friend so i'm not worried) I essentially want a modern car in a Mk2 so my plans are to clean it up completely, fit a 20v Turbo, air conditioning, full electric interior, air ride and some fancy wheels no doubt.

Unfortunately, I have next to no mechanical knowledge. My experience goes as far as changing an alternator and fuel pump, fitting coilers and wiring in stereos. But hey, with a Haynes manual, a laptop and Edition38, i'm going to give it a go!

And tucked away until I get back from Centre Parks in two weeks...

I apologise now for any questions that seem absolutely retarded!

****************************************

I said i'd leave it alone for two weeks. However, I had a spare hour or so earlier so decided now was better than ever to get on with it...

In my mind, my first job is to get the engine out so I can begin cleaning the bay and finding our exactly what i'm working with.

******************************************

Another evening, another hour or so in the garage. Curiosity last night had me pull one of the arch trims off. They were screwed on so I wasn't overly optimistic.

This was the front wing...

After a large *Gulp*, i decided tonight would be the night I pull the wing off and see just how bad the inner wing is. And after what seems like hours fighting with underseal, i'm rather chuffed!

And how it's spending the night...

This evening I spent around £80 on axel stands, trolley jack etc. My first port of call tomorrow is to purchase a heat gun to then pull the other wing off on Wednesday!

Two new wings are definitely in order!

I've had the car three days and that's where I'm upto so far...

Good effort

I was only thinking the other day that I should get an older VW and put a 1.8T in it.

I like the idea of the old styling with mod cons & reliability.

Good luck with it

I'm after a BAM 1.8T (225bhp) engine for turn-of-the-key reliability, full Audi S3 electric and heated interior and air ride. I also want to retro-fit electric windows and mirrors too.. I'm bored of Mk2s with carburettor issues and I'm bored of smashing them to bits.

It's time to build a car that can be what I want without killing it. It'll also be a car I'd never sell.

That Voomeran kit is pretty sweet but seriously pricey!

Good stuff Jay, nothing like a mk2 to build your mechanical knowledge up too.

Just a quick one and a pet hate of mine - All mk2 Golfs are Type 19. That was VWs code for the Mk2 Golf. Even the later ones without the quarter light windows.

As long as there's no rot underneath, around the fuel cap or the wiper bung you'll be fine with a set of new wings. Might as well roll the arches while they're off the car too - will be easier then.

Post 89 actually used the code 1G or G1 They're the bodies that have a VW badge in the rear panel. Type19s are 89 and earlier and don't have the badge. They also have LHD wipers as VW didn't make RHD wipers for them.

I'm tempted to extend the arches by around half an inch. It allows for wider wheels, gives it a more aggressive look and isn't massive work.

Don't you drive an Audi? lol

There's isn't really anything to 'get'. Although I probably wouldn't own one, I do like a good mk2 Golf, plus I'm all for someone keeping an old car on the road. Should be a good project this!

G60 wings are wider, yes. But they're also £250 per arch. Then around £100 per arch trims lol

Again, I spent the whole day at work saying "I'm leaving the car alone tonight". Yeh, didn't happen. I've purchased a heatgun and a drink with wire attachments. I've never felt so manly!

I've whipped the wing off in a quarter of the time it took yesterday thanks to the heatgun and drill. Again, the inner wing is solid! The wing is pretty good but still, a new one will be ordered.

I have no idea what I'm going to do tomorrow.

Yeah but its not running airbags and wheels that cost a third of my house. This is all I can make out from the recent influx of VAG offerings I see at shows. Oh and valeters tape

I saw a black mk2 golf gti 16v last weekend go past my house - no silly ride height or whatever just a set of black comp 5 spokes and that was it. I nearly had a heart attack seeing one that was close to being standard.

My ultimate dream car would be a modernised (like your plans) mk2 gti, yellow, 2.0tfsi, DSG and the Haldex awd system!

Would cost £££££ though

It's a scene thing saying "type 19". They are all based on the type19 chassis just the specs changed with the years. It's a way for owners to think they have something special when basically they just have a shit spec Golf.

Read my post above. The chassis code makes it a "type 19". It changed around 87 to "1G"

Also, there were over 50 changes between a Type 19 and 1G. I would post them but I'm in a forest with shit signal.

They're all still a Type 19.
