Free Programmes
I got a new laptop, well 2nd hand but its pretty new, and wondering if anyone reccommends any free programmes to download for it that either help it or are just really handy?
Iv downloaded a few things like Ccleaner which cleans the laptop up of any shite you dont need, and a temperature thing that keeps checks on th temperature inside it and you can adjust the fans if its getting too hot but i jus use it to keep an eye on the temp. Both programmes had really good reviews
Are those RAM optimisers any good, and harmless? Seen a few programmes aswell that say they improve the internet connection thru the laptop for faster browsin? Had good reviews too
Need a sound editor aswell, i like PolderbitS but u gotta pay for it, any good free ones, not Audacity tho
Ill add what stuff iv downloaded when i get home

They both look decent, is the Defraggler thing better than the normal defrag thing on the laptop on Windows?
I was gonna download a RAM optimiser thing which frees up RAM when needed but one review i read said they are harmful to the laptop somehow.. It's got 4gb of RAM anyway so might not need one?

never seen much effect on performance with optimizers, spend more ram than save it imo.

I used to have one on the old laptop but it was a skud of a thing, it did work though if it was bogging down like fuck i just right clicked the icon and clicked Free Up RAM, and it would free up enough RAM so that i could use the laptop instead of it lagging

I know its not anything to do with enhancing-performance on your laptop but if you like to customise your commy ie. new themes, icons, bootup screen, cursors etc go to Stardock.com, really smart if you're into customisation.

RAM optimisers are bullshit.
As are programs which claim to increase download speed e.g. tcpoptimiser
What version of windows is it?
If it's XP;
http://tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm
Or
http://www.tweakhound.com/windows7/tweaking/index.html
For windows 7
That's the best way of optimising your operating system if any imo.
But with 4gb of ram.. well nothing you will use will utilise that, and if it's got 4gb ram i imagine it has a decent processor to, if you're only browsing/listening to music/streaming/downloading and shit your specs are fine and the only way to go quicker is to get a proper phone line rather than getting your internet from a satellite, as it's your internet not your laptop which is the bottleneck.
CCleaner is ace though, for anti virus/malware download malware bytes anti malware which is the best imo.

I can only get internet through satellite, i have no other options
I changed my antivirus from AVG to Avast...and downloaded MalwareBytes
Got CCleaner and Advanced System Care 3 - to clean the computer up
Got Speedfan as it displays your laptop temperature in the bottom right corner, really handy
Got DVDVideoSoft Free Studio Manager as it has so much stuff on it it's hard to believe it's free, really handy for the YouTube downloaders but there is loads more things on it if anyones never seen it before
Also got Free Download Manager and it does actually increase my download speed, the downloads sit faster and also at a steadier speed instead of going up and down alot
Would recommend every one of the programmes i mentioned
My laptop is running Vista, i didn't like it at first but don't mind it now, whats it actually like from someone who knows about computers, do you reckon its shit? Worth getting Windows 7?

Vista was shit to begin with, but as long as you are upto date (service pack 2), then it is fine. Windows 7 is still an improvement in my opinion, but i wouldnt pay for it just to upgrade form vista SP2. How ever if your not paying..........
Think ill get that DVDVideoSoft Free Studio Manager, sounds good if it lets you download off youtube!

I just followed the instructions on this page - http://www.tweakvista.com/articles/3...-with-opendns/
To use OpenDNS as my DNS, instead of my ISP's one
Made a huge difference, now when i load a page like on SaxP, it opens it straight away instead of the old 3-5 second delay i used to have!

Well I like XP and 7 over vista.. I've had a lot of problems with it personally.
But it's liveable, and definitely not worth paying for 7.. Getting it from somewhere else though is possible, but you'd lose all your shit unless you back it up obviously.. Like you can upgrade and keep your files, but clean install is a much better way of doing it.

Do you use XP over 7?
I understand people using XP over vista when it first came out. But isnt there alot of issues with windows XP and running more then 4 gb of ram, and not many 64 bit drivers?
I can understand companies still running it as they may have software optimised for it, but surely 7 is a big improvement over xp for anyone else? Feel free to correct me.
Also pete ill send you something in PM about windows 7...
