Default cross trainer or treadmill?

im going to get one of the above, basically to improve my cardio and for fat loss, which one do you think would be most effective, considering price is a major factor.....

Cross trainer, as cheap treadmills are balls and you can't run on them without fear of the belt slipping and you smashing your face on it as a result.

or go out running for free, best fat burner IMO, much better training.
you hardly use as much energy on a treadmill as you do naturaly running.
as long as you can lift your legs up constantly you can go on a treadmill for ever, but when dragging your body round the hills its much harder.

dont bother with either.

aha, dont get me wrong, treadmills and cross trainers are good, i use CV equipment like that every morning in work if i dont go out running/biking
it certainly gets your heart rate going, im always dripping with sweat after, but never as tired as i am after going out running around the hills.
i only use the CV equipment purely because its free and good when its shite weather outside , if i had to pay id just go running/biking outside everyday haha.
