Default Rad fan on permanently

To stop it I have to take the fuse out. If I put the fuse in, w/o the keys in the ignition and when the engine is totally cold, it'll come straight on. It does this when the thermoswitch is unplugged so that's not faulty (new anyway). Thermostat and relay are new. I've asked this before and have done all the suggestions and still no joy. In this weather, if going into town where I have to sit in traffic, I put the fuse in and take it out when I get home and, of course, if I go in a supermarket it sits there fanning away on full speed. It does stay cool enough if I leave the heating on (no fan at all) but had enough of that. Want it sorted. VTS mk1 99. Any ideas?

Your going to need to take a look at the wiring, i would hazard a guess that a wire is shorted to + on the control side of the relay

A short is one thing I thought might be the problem. Seems logical considering the ignition isn't even on etc eh. Cheers for validating my thinking. I'm assuming it's a two speed which means more complicated wiring. It's not something I know a lot about and other than following around the wiring I can see connected to the fan, and relay then, I wouldn't be looking much further. Hoperfully I'll see something, ta

I don't know if this will help but I had an audi that was doing the exact same thing, was a faulty water temperature sensor.

hi Slevan, could be a faulty water temp switch. It did cross my mind but it comes on with the temp switch unplugged so I'm guessing it's elsewhere. Thanks for your input

I'm assuming you have the separarate switch on the radiator for the fan.

Well that's in series so I'm guessing the relay is fubar inside. Easy swap

The fan is always permanent live, the circuit isn't switched. Only that one on the rad controls it.
