Default 106 GTI replacement VIN plate

Hi all, just joined a few days ago and have been trawling through some very interesting and useful threads, however, i couldn't find any info regarding the requirement by law to have the aluminium VIN plate fixed to the slam panel? the VIN is stamped into the scuttle panel lip so is this enough or for example - if i went to MOT the car would it fail due to the aluminium VIN plate not being fixed to the slam panel?

No it won't fail the MOT for having the aluminium plate missing. This is the very reason the VIN is stamped onto the shell. The slam panel is easily removed. If they didn't match and there was doubt as to the vehicles identity the tester could refuse to test it I suppose.

Peugeot dealer will make you a new VIN plate for a small fee. if you want one.

Also, in case you're also wondering (and anyone else reading this thread in future), re-shelling a vehicle cannot be done legally with a second hand shell. You MUST use the original VIN and registration plate for the donor shell.

Great news!! since you are so knowledgeable i have another question....i also have a brand new S2 106 Gti shell and a crashed 1998 S2 106 Gti donor car. The plan is to re-shell the crashed donor car into the brand new shell, however, the new shell does not have any stampings on the scuttle panel but i have the original VIN that i was intending to fix to the slam panel, so would i have to stamp or get the VIN stamped onto the scuttle panel?

Yes. You will have a "rebuilt" vehicle. See this link https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registrat...built-vehicles

Basically you fill in the form stating what bits you've changed. If it's a new shell they (VOSA) might want to inspect it. You will need to provide proof the shell is new by producing a receipt etc.

Once the car has been accepted, you'll get a VIN number which you can then have stamped onto the shell. You'll also get to keep the original number plate.

If you stamp it yourself before it's inspected or before you get approval, they'll just say you've rung it and they'll not let you use it on the road. They'll electronically scrap it so you can't tax it etc.

DVLA and VOSA will keep you right

They are quite helpful, believe it or not.
