Default how a tachometer works

hello again, can someone explain to me how do a tachometer works in a Saxo 1.4 2002?

Is it some kind of sensor or its in the instrument cluster?

The mileage is stored in a module on the back of the instrument cluster,if you fit another tachometer then the mileages are added together(to stop you clocking the vehicle)

I hope there is some kind of way to fix just the tacho ill rather try that instead off replacing the whole instrument cluster.

thank you for your answers.

So managed to find an exact same speedo like mine from a friend we swapped it over in my car the mileage changed tho lol, everything works fine except the tacho xD.. So I guess its more an electronic fail for the tachometer not the whole instrument cluster..
