Quick internet related question - Saxperience

The router and my PC are both down stairs and my dads PC is up stairs.

My PC is connected to the router via a 1M long ethernet cable and my dad's is the same but his cable is 15m long.

I want to take my PC in my room which is up stairs but want to leave the router where it is now. Is it possible use some sort of adapter for the cable my dad is using and get 2 internet connections from that or do I have to get another 15m cable and wire that to my bedroom?

I can't move the router to my bed room because there is only one phone jack and thats down stairs. And I don't want to go wireless either.

Ideas?

Dad's cable goes to switch as the "WAN" connection, you then need 2 more cables, one to your PC and one to your dad's PC. Simples.

So basically I need one of THESE. Plug the 15m cable into it, then plug in another 2 cable which will feed each PC, correct?

Yup - that would do fine.

Since you make no mention of file transfers between machines - that would will do fine. If you want one that has more potential in the future, go for a gigabit one - but it does mean the cabling and network cards on the machines needs to support gigabit too.

But that sounds like overkill, if all you're doing is connecting to the router to access the internet from each machine.

Oh - and personally, i'd go for a more well known make. Although what difference it would make to performance/reliability is probably negligable.

I've been using a netgear router for 2 years now, can't fault it so I'd suggest getting one of their switches as gd16 said.

All you need to do is just buy a longer cable. Simply remover the 1m patch you're already using and plug in a new longer patch - job done. no need to buy new switches etc if all you're after is a longer cable. the cable can be as long as you like (as long as its no more than 99.5m - the limitations of CAT5e)

oh and GD16 if you have a gigabit switch, the devices that are connected to it will still work at 10/100. they're completly backwards compatible. If you have 10/100/1000 devices (those that have gigabit connections) then they will connect at 1000Mbps.. Tbh though you'll only really need giga lan if you're streaming high def vid across your network or you're consistently chunking large amouts of data from one machine to another.
