Default Ecu...key..but do u need transponder box?

Okay im in the middle of doing a 16v conversion to my vtr...
now ive been given the ecu -loc ked, loom, key and barrel but no black box

now tim, (katiescar) has not had the black box (transponder) plugged in while running the engine..so why isit or is it not essential to have the black box..
will the ecu still work? does the chip in the key mate with the barrel and therefore tell the ecu..?? im lost...any help appriciated..Thanks

The easy thing to do would be to bring it down and try it on my car like you were meant to yesterday!

Along with that Tap!
