Read the initial post Back windows can be completely blacked out, it's the drivers/passengers side windows and the windscreen that you need to leave alone (not worth doing the 25% or so IMO)

The altering of any rear light that obscures, reduces or changes the colour of light emitted in any way shape or form is prohibited for road use. So in short tinting rear lights is illegal for road vehicles. Same goes for rear reflectors it is illegal to tint them.

You can smoke/tint the lights providing you can see them in daylight what you CAN'T do is smoke/tint the reflector.
Or do what some noob did on police interceptors, use stockings.

Strictly speaking this is not true. Anything that obscures, changes the colour or reduces the light output and the police have the right to pull you. The same apply to lights as it does reflectors.

I just got stopped in the Audi by VOSA and my tints on the front let through 47%. It was part of a road safety week at work. They got VOSA in and the rozzers and harassed anyone with a modded car (its lowered 60mm on white 19"s), he struggled to find anything wrong.
He told me the legal limit is 45% and let me on my way, so id go with that. At least you know its up to date.
Legally anyway with a VOSA check you can palm them off to a more 'suitable date and time' to your liking. They have no powers whatsoever - its the coppers who do. They can force an inspection on your car if they deem it to be dangerous.

That is worrying as the law is side windows in front of the B pillar must let 70% of light pass and 75% for front screen. I don't know where they pulled 45% from as that is a extremely dark tint.
