Default Thermostat housing O ring?

Hi All,

Sagas continue with the VTS I have bought. Today I was fixing a split bottom hose and replacing the thermostat. The old stat had failed in the open position.

New stat fitted fine, put the rubber seal around the outside of the stat. Then I noticed there is a groove in the housing that looks like it should have a O ring in it. Didn't have any O rings so I just fitted it up as to me it looks like the rubber ring around the stat should seal.

Bolted it up, filled up and bled and when I ran it there were no leaks. Is the O ring mandatory or just to help avoid leaks in addition to the stat seal ?

Thanks
Craig

It was a difficult and costly (for what it was) seal to get from Cit/Pug.
many gasket seals, will do the job.

I've pinched a couple of O rings from the maintenance guys at work that look the right size so should be OK. So far though still no leaks without it!
