Xbox Windows Extender?
Right well been messing about with this and trying to get my movies and albums from my laptop to play through the xbox.
Trouble is they are all AVI and the xbox wont play these anyone know what formats are supported and where I can get a free converter from?

Bit weird, I've got loads of films/ videos in AVI and play through an external HDD on xbox, they play fine?

Ye, guess it must make a difference playing over the explorer thing then, guess it may only play WMV and MPG as they are windows recognized formats?

I stream content to my 360 from my server and most films are in .avi format. It should have the codecs on it already

When I click on an avi it just says codec not supported?

avi is a shell, it depends what they're encoded with.
How are you trying to play them exactly?

if u got ur xbox online in the game add on bits theres actually an update on there u can download to play avi files

Do you have media centre on your laptop, if not it wont work? Get twonkymedia server and install it on your laptop ( XP or VISTA) as this will turn your PC into a media server.
Once you've installed it and setup which files you want it to access, go to your xbox and it should show as a media server.
