6x9's and a Sub.
Now this question get's asked a lot, I read Ashley’s guide and openly admit I know NOTHING about ICE.
Anyway, I was talking to 2 different guys (sisters boyfriend, and a friend who worked in a car audio place). I mean, he was saying all these numbers and shit, and I just nodded and said yes.
But I bought up 6x9's and a sub combination, and they both said it can work and be fine, it all depends on the sub box (size, material, something about partitions within the box, RMS, loads of crap), the way the 6x9's are secured etc.

comps up front
sub in the boot
6x9s are a good idea, but generally, even if theyre in well made boxes. the fact that the sound waves are behind you arent how music should sound..
have you ever been to a gig, and faced the crowd instead of the band? didnt think so, this is because if you look in the mirror at your ears, sound is meant to travel in from the front
it's different with subs for two reasons, one they have to be behind you for the size of them, and 2. low bass frequency's travel different to high freq's
i wont bore you with a shit load of tech knowledge as youve admitted yourself you wont understand it
but having 6x9's and a sub does NOT depend on the sub box what so ever.. even if the sub box is facing directly at the hatch, the bass freqs / sound waves will still bounce off and interact with the freqs produced by the 6x9s creating a messy sound
6x9s are also a coaxial type of speaker, and therefore will never have the clarity that a component system can produce
