Default Original head unit uncertainty

Im thinking about replacing the front and rear speakers, but my head unit is original, and i was told i may need a new one as the new speakers may need more wattage than it outputs? is this true or a lie? and if its true, is it cheaper and more worthwhile to buy an amp, or new head unit.

you can run different speakers from the original headunit but they wont sound the best that they could. The cheapest way is to get a new headunit as with an amp there is fitting wiring to add to the price and there is no point amping the original headunit.

the head unit is the basis of any good install,
and you'll never have a good one without a decent head unti, the original just isn't meant to have a system built upto it
