Default ECU type?

I'm fairly new to engine conversions etc, so I was just wondering, how do you tell whether you have a 3 plug or 1 plug ECU? Is there a certain age of cars etc, because I'm thinking of doing a VT* conversion some time in the near future.

Thanks

If you have a look on the left hand side of your engine bay, you'll see a silver unit which is your ECU (it maybe covered by a black ECU cover) - it'll either have 1 or 3 plugs going into it. Mk2's are 3 plug for example.
