Default Saxo engine in a kit car (Gearbox question)

Hello.
I have amassed a couple of spare engines and ECU + other ancillaries over the years. Me and my old man are discussing how to use them.

We're in the running (hopefully) for a Bond Equipe GT - which is a lovely little old thing. It has no running gear.

The equipe is rear wheel drive and it presents an issue using the standard VTS box obviously. I had suggested mating another gearbox on there, using some form of adapter plate. Then a rumour appeared that the 16v engine would mate easily to some hillman(?) gearbox... I'm not sure where or how I heard that, or if it is true.

Has anyone had any experience of matching a gearbox to the 16v to run in RWD?

Interesting concept, never heard of anybody making one RWD but not been around them too long, but there are 2 logical ways of doing it. Nobody will make an adapter plate or I suspect that nobody will, so you will have to find a suitable gearbox & have one made, often the problem doing this is finding a box with a long enough input shaft that can effectively be shortened by 15mm as you lose that length with the plate. The other way if you have access to a milling machine & a Tig welder is to machine the Saxo gearbox housing down & then machine the front bell housing of your gearbox down then weld both parts together so you end up with something like this

This was done to put a BMW gearbox onto a Ford ST engine (I think)

Best of luck either way, keep everybody posted how you get along & let me know if it will be at Stoneleigh to have a look next year.

Great idea there. I'll add that to the list of possibilities.

I've found a thread: http://www.106rallyeforum.com/forum2...&highlight=imp
where the rallye engine ended up in an Imp. If anyone is interested.

Nice, used to have a 1965 Stiletto myself at the end of the 70's rotten as a peach even then, the sills had been repaired with wood & filler. But he has basically laid out the way to get an adaptor plate made for you.

LOL. I once witnessed a front wing on a herald, that had a paper mache and cardboard repair. But nothing comes close to the wood.

My next consideration would be the gear lever. I'll have to give this some real thought.

Its more the location of it, how far down the tunnel etc in relation to the driving position.

That's all going to be dependent on the box & the engine position

Plenty of people use the K-series engine in RWD applications and smaller version of that engine they came with a development of the MA box, might be seeing what those guys do about it.
Maybe not so much adaptor plates or bell housings but at least with input shafts etc.
