it's not the turbo "sticking" - it's running on its own engine oil. Bad seals in the turbo or rings can cause it. Sucks to be him.

They say the engine was off and the keys out.

Do you mean putting it in 5th and just dropping the clutch?

Known as a Diesel Runaway.... Happens when the turbo starts burning the engine oil.
Seen this happen a couple of times before, Its not nice at all. They're not easy to stall at all, they're creating much, much more power than it would normally.
Seen it happen on a pretty tuned derv before, it wouldnt stall and the only way he could stop it from blowing up was to sacrifice the turbo.

not just limited to turbos but much more likely for sure. Only way to stop em really is co2 fire extinguisher down its throat. You cant generally stall them.

That's it, put in gear at least in 4th or 5th and drop the clutch. People should be taught this really, it's not the first time I hear about cars going full throttle on their own. If you don't stop the engine it's bound to go up in flames.

shift from drive to park at around 65 mph while slamming on the brakes to stall the car before the converter kicks in. Though not recommended as you might slightly damage the transmission.
