Default PS3, games freezing and error code 8001002F = dead hard disc drive!

Graeme was struggling to install the latest PS3 update v2.6 to his console on Friday, so he brought it around to try via my net connection. still no good!? We downloaded the update to USB and tried installing via that route, but it wouldn't install past 1%

We decided to reformat the HDD - after a 'quick' re-format, we tried again, but it wouldn't install past 1%. We decided to go for the full re-format of his 40Gb drive. It was estimated to take nearly 3 hours FFS!

About an hour into the re-format, at 29% complete, PS3 error code 8001002F popped up. The re-format could not be completed. A quick google look-up showed this was a common error associated with damaged PS3 hard discs. D'oh!

Whilst G was at work today, I popped to PC World and picked out a nice little laptop spec 2.5" SATA HDD, speed 5400rpm the same as the standard PS3 HDD, but with a capacity of 160Gb. Not bad for £44.03!

Graeme's on his way around here now. We're gonna go to the pub for some food, then a few beers, then swap the HDD later this evening.

We'll update with pics - hopefully (for Graeme's sake) we don't get too drunk

Simo

Well, that was an absolute doddle to do... it took no more than about 4 minutes, serisouly!

Basic steps...

- Unclip plastic cover on side of PS3 using a screwdriver
- Unscrew the blue screw, which holds the HDD carrier in place.
- Lift up metal retaining clip, to release the HDD carrier.
- Slide the HDD carrier sideways and pull out.
- Unscrew 4 grub screws that hold the HDD to the HDD carrier.
- Remove old HDD and slot new HDD into HDD carrier
- Screw 4 screws back in to hold the new HDD to the carrier.
- Insert HDD carrier back into slot on side of PS3.
- Slide HDD carrier sideways to locate on terminals of HDD.
- Push metal retaining clip back down to secure the carrier in place.
- Tighten up blue screw and check HDD is secure in place.
- Replace palstic cover.
- Turn ON PS3 and 'format' new HDD.
- Setup user accounts, etc... job done!
- Sit down, relax... and have another beer!

The other thing I forgot to mention... if you replace your hard disc before it dies, you can backup all of your saved game data, trophies, etc, etc to USB, then re-load them to your new disc once formatted.

What did you do with the old PS3 drive? You can get an enclosure from ebuyer for less than £10 to use it as an external HDD if it still works.

There's plenty of useful programs for windows that can help check/repair/format drives as well.

I bought this one last week when I got a replacement drive and works like a charm.
