Default 106 GTi Track Car Project

So I've had a couple of Saxos, an Icelandic grey 16v VTR and a black 8v VTR.

The black one died so I rebuild my Icelandic and then eventually put a 16v in... A week later driving a bit too fast on a corner I crashed it.

Lesson learnt.

I still had the black saxo and was going to put the 16v in that and put it through an MOT as it had no rust at all and a good axle.

Anyways, was browsing the forums and seen this car up for sale for £350 with a knocking engine running on 3 cylinders, standard bar an exhaust and 6x9s.

Paid £330 with tax until January and MOT until may.

Took the risk and drove 150 miles there, paid the lad and had a look at the engine, turns out the spark plug wasn't screwed in on cylinder 4.

Off to a local b&q picked up a 16mm spark plug socket (couldn't find mine)

Screwed back in, started and ran perfect, bargain.

Drove about 130-140miles home, pulled off a roundabout "spiritedly" and it sounded funny and a little down on power, pulled over and spark plug had popped out, turns out it's take the thread out....

So ordered a few bits to repair it for about £10 and should be with me soon.

Here's some pics :-

My Icelandic

The GTi

So the plan :-

As you can see from the last pic the laquer is peeling and the roof is wrapped matte black, I'm possibly going to get this resprayed.

Get it lowered 40-50mm, then get some B8s/Gaz coilovers.

Respray my VTS alloys anthracite and fit

Get a 2" pugsport

Wrap and fit my 4-1 manifold

Fit my omp Corsica steering wheel

Fit omp upper brace

Fit linkages

Get a new lower brace

Strip it

Fit my buckets + harness... Possibly buy new ones.

Full cage.

Set of cams.

Then track it.

Slightly longer term I plan on the following:-

Track alloys and AD08s/R888s
Fully polybush/uprated mounts
Itbs + predator ecu
Satchshift
Polycarb/Perspex windows

Make it a weekend/balls out track car.

This is more of a thread to follow my own progress but will be interested to see what others think.

It could be mint.

Mind the laquar peel will require repainting. You could probs get away with just getting that small section blown over though.

It'll be hooning around a track a lot next year, hopefully with added power and some shiny racecar bits.

330 quid for a tax and tested car of any variety is pretty good going let alone a black 106 gti.
Shame about the spark plug though but a helicoil or timesert will sort that out

Don't forget a non sunroof gti lol body work could be a touch better but I'm over the moon with what I paid! Ordered a timesert kinda thing for it, but the tap to make it fit is oversized 14mm but the head to screw it needs a 21mm socket which doesn't fit down the port to retap it! So I'm unsure what to do.

Absolute bargain! Get a bucket and sponge over it though!

If I had the chance I'd go back and get a GTI, they do look so much better than Saxo's.

It'll be getting a good clean this weekend, I'll also be checking axle and for rust although I'm 95% sure there isn't any!

Small update, my dad retapped and threaded the head today, so it's running and safe to say it pulls rather well.

Debating wether to lower soon or wait a while longer until I can get me some gaz coilovers

Wait on the Gaz Coilovers. Mickswan runs them and never has a bad thing to say about them.

Either those or B8's and Faulkners. Especially as you mention you want to use it for track use.

Think I will wait tbh, I don't fancy B8s because some have said they are too soft for track, and I only do 7 miles a day so comfort isn't an issue for me really.
