Why can't you just use masking tape 
I'll let you know once I've picked up some more during the week as I have 2 details this week so need to make sure I have enough first.

For the same reason i dont use it during a detail....sticky shit it leaves behind, and the fact it sometimes doesnt stick lol.

Luckily I'm a spray finisher and don't have to fork out £1.63 a roll!! For 3M aswell, wouldn't catch me buying that.
