Throttle bodies should come with a health warning!
****Warning**** Throttle bodies may cause immense amounts of stress, empty wallets, heartache and above all nothing but a kick in the teeth.
From the hassle it sounds your having and the mass’s amounts of hassle Kevin has had with his 172, is it really worth for the small margin of gain your going to get?

How many tbd engines run problem free though.
kevs is just issues in general with the engines, and toad seems to have had a bottom end which was in a bad state from when it was built originally.
Id say a 60-70bhp gain on an OE engine for a spec like toads is more than a small gain, and thats not even looking at the midrange and throttle response.
Toads just been very unlucky with this build.

I ran a throttlebodied car for a few years on the road without issue. As long as the fuelling is correct it is not going to make any difference.
In some ways having equal fuel and air to each cylinder will make it more reliable.
Shit happens occasionally though

Thats less to do with bodies and more to do with incompetant builders then isnt it.
I could reel off a load of bodied engines over years which ran trouble free.
Including dan beadles PP engine.

As a big brand GMC are still one of the most reputable companies out there, Ive lost count of the amount of fuck ups john has sorted on other peoples cars, but then again he will make mistakes to. Things happen but its how you deal with them and the customer thats important.
Plenty of local garages with skilled personel who can build a good engine.
For example craigs engine was built by a local garage, and the only real issues it had was him killing gearboxes doing 1/4miles, a coilpack failing and then a short on the alternator (which should have been sorted when he knew about it).
Theres lots of engines built by people on their own aswell in their own garages which run problem free.
Some companies have bad reputations and people still use them... its life.
