check all round the car, engine, condition of bodywork, underneath and ask for a test drive so you know how the owner has been driving it and ask for all the papers like service history, mot's and logbook.

there's some things that apply to some cars, but as an overall rule, check everything on the car and test drive it aswell.

Also, test drive more than 1 (dont buy the first you see), as the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc may be better, but they may not.

As above, check underneath, check for rust/wear and tear etc, check the condition of the engine (clean or dirty?) and tyres, check the tyres, this should give a clue as to how the car has been used and maybe abused.
