Try giving Malware Bytes a go! This program picks up the nasty viruses and spyware that AVG can pick up. Been using this for time, and not 1 problem

AML free registry Cleaner. - Best free registry cleaner imo.
CCleaner - Deletes temporary files/crap you pick up from the internetz, also has a registry cleaner and backup function.
ATF cleaner - Does the same thing as CCleaner, just an alternative.
Other free and good antispyware/antivirus (apart from adaware and AVG, which are very good);
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
AntiVir PE Classic
Spybot - Search & Destroy
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
Hijack this - Registry prober and patcher, wouldn't recommend it for a novice, but it can be useful.

i use NOD 32 great program, dont even get any problems with viruses or spyware, a trail can be found using google, so can keys... to activate the trail
can be used together with malware bytes..
CCleaner is good clean the pc
Revo uninstaller to remove left over from programs you remove
when browsing the internet using firefox... DO NOT STORE PASSWORDS.... if you click tools > options > security > saved passwords .... they can be viewed in plain text!
also adblock plus is a great addon for blocking website add's even blocks the google and facebook adds....
macafee site advisor helps also... this can be used to check a websites contents for known problems, such as fake websites or mallware

Swap avg for Avast, detects much more than avg, and is lighter on system rescources.

'Disk Cleanup' is a good preventative maintenance tool as well.
Also Start > Run > Msconfig, see whats in the startup for windows, may be a lot of crap you dont need running in the background.
also keep your anti-viruses up to date! and scan for spyware too
