You get what you pay for to be honest. From experience & in my opinion i wouldnt go to Fitness First unless you know what your doing yourself.
The best thing to do is go to the blub have a look around, ask questions & see what they can offer you. You may find the cheaper ones are better... most places will knock the joining fee off if there is any, as this is money for nothing to be totally honest
Id look for a good range of classes, & good gym equipment, & ask the trainiers questions too as sometimes they can be, err... not that hot! check out the changing area & make sure all is well too....
Some Good chains are Courtneys, Energy, David Loyd, Esporta.
If you have around £5k+ spare per year you can join my spa! LOL

i was a memeber of total fitness but it didnt suit me and cost loads of money! but it was very clean!
i have joing the local lesure centre scheme which means i can go to all the classes and gyms in warrington, which is great for me! i dont use the pools tho!
finding a gym which fits round your lifestyle is best.
