Sounds like you got ripped off. He probably did the towel trick to make it work for a short amount of time. I'd go back to him.

Re: rrod
Hold the sync button in while pressing the eject button 4 times (one after another) ... Take note of the number of lights that flash...
Remember 4 flashing = 0
Usual code is 0102.

send back to microsoft, dont matter if you bought it second hand aslong as the console hasnt been opened just ring microsoft tell them the console id number and they will tell you whether you can get it repaired for free.
9/10 times they will repair it for free aslong as the console hasnt been opened.

Sorry to hijack thread a little but in my old elite I have no video anyone got any ideas on what to do with it, I've opened it up and can do pretty much anything with it, its all open and the moment just dont want to do completely irrelevant things and make it worse

Re: rrod
^ open the console, check what the state of the GPU is in, perhaps may need fresh paste, if problem is still there is the ANA chip, just apply weight to it and see if it's any better, plenty of fixes available on the net. I've used the 8 penny one before

Re: rrod
Unless you have a high gain magnifier, pin point soldering iron and hands that don't move then I wouldn't even attempt to swap chips around...
Is the board straight? Tried heatgunning/ hairdryer-ing around the chip and joints?
You may find that bending the corner of the top left board up while loading the xbox will make it work, don't do it too much, I've fried 2 of my 9 so far that had this issue.
Rather delicate to say the least!

Just because it has the old firmware on doesn't meant its banned from live.
Once it's banned ... ITS BANNED, Unless you re-program the eeprom chip, which you will require specialist tools / hardware to do.
Running the old firmware is fine tbh, My mate still runs iXtreme 1.2, however this limits him to not being able to play the most recent games as they are Wave 3.
Bar that it's the same as any.

Re: rrod
You tried flexing it on the top left corner while you power it up?
Usualy that is the case, perhaps needs weights on it and properly heat gunning.
Suppose you have tried other cables, and also the display reset incase the settings ain't workin with your tv... It's funny how many peoples issues are fixed by that...
Look for the display reset on a search, it's something like turn xbox on, hold Y and left trigger till it restarts it's self... Double check though

Re: rrod
Yep. Go easy with it though and remember to hold it there when you turn it on, don't flex it too much or sparks will fly and end up dead like 2 of my load are haha..
