Sorted myself out a new exhaust and fitted it tonight. Sound wise - a bit louder than the scorpion on idle, raspy with a few revs. Fits nicely though too and it suits the back of the saxo

Will get better photos tomorrow, when both cars might actually get their first wash in months

Washed both cars today. I hate washing really dirty cars it takes forever

Saxo getting a wash

Clio washed and getting some tyre shine for the first time since about september

How the new exhaust sits. I've no idea what brand it is mind you but it looks and sounds alright.

Heres how it sounds, apologies for the camera and sound quality

Dropped the gearbox oil out today as it contained molyslip, as I'd re-used it from the s1 rallye box. Been doing some research and it seems the stuff they put in molyslip isn't any good for synchros so out it came. Replace it with comma oil again but the more expensive semi synthetic stuff. No where stocks Total round here, I went to every motorfactors within 10 miles and nothing

Had a little play with the gear selection system again tonight, as I've read a few threads where people have improved their shift quite easily enough.
Found loads of play in the selector mechanism at the back of the box, could pull it a good few mm in and out and this was giving a sloppy shift. I thought this box had been sorted, but I got confused with my previous rally one

Take one mk 1 drive shaft nut

Cut the nut part off leaving the lip

Fits the round selector shaft on the back of the box perfectly and down the gap where the arm slides in!
However my old arm was worn, the hole was oval shaped in the vertical axis. Luckily I'd bought another arm from Mankee for an experiment with the rallye box I had previously on the car.
Found it was missing the ball joint for the linkage, luckily I'd saved one from my previous box as I had to buy some in and they came on a threaded bar. Drilled the hole on the arm out and fitted but I had to grind down the nut on the back as it caught the box casing but in the end it fitted fine. I tried using a bolt instead of the roll pin - dont bother doing this it gives a horrid feeling to the stick as it just flops about when in gear. This is due to when use a bolt that slightly undersize to fit in the hole, the selector can turn a bit before the actual selector on the box, this is then massively exaggerated via the gearstick. The roll pin expands inside the holes and makes it feel "proper" - luckily I didnt even need to replace the roll pin as it was fine so just greased it and fitted it. 32p saved! Over all the job cost me £0.00 and the shift feels lovely and as often quoted like a rifle bolt, cant imagine what it'll feel like with a new golf ball!

Silvertop fuel rail bolts on no problem, coil pack has to be secured on the cam pulley side of the head only as there isn't a threaded lug for it at the other end but doesnt cause any issues, it still makes good contact and wont come off.
Regarding the rallye box I dont have it any more unfortunately, I owed a mate a big favour and he had it off me

Cheers mate much appreciated
I'd love to build another metro at some point just funds stopping me really but I dont think I'll lose the love - I think once you start messing about with them they get under your skin as its the perfect Q car due to its awful reputation!

Just been wiring in the temp sensor from the rad on this as the ebay manual one broke (was to be expected really!) so now the fan is back under control of the radiator mounted sensor. Comes on at 3/4s up the gauge but thats just a foible of the rallye head when using VTR sensors causing it to over read

I've always had a problem with the temp gauge in this car, constantly being at 3/4s when running normally. I've changed the water pump, radiator, sensors, thermostat basically everything. With research though I found that the rallye head doesnt have its sensor in a water way, but tonight I solved this "problem".

On the off chance I removed a blanking plug on the stat housing and guess what, the sensor fitted perfectly

Modified the wiring to suit and now just bled it up - gauge sits at just under half and goes up to just below three quarters then the fan comes on and drops back to under half again so thats a nice fix.

Heatshrink is on the cards but electrical tape will do for now.

A nice simple fix that Im ashamed I didnt spot before really. I cant believe that this is gauge issue is perceived as "normal" with a rallye , as on the Rallye Register people have said just to put up with it but I found it staggering to believe that a modern car wont sit at half as thats pretty much common practice, even if its just or peace of mind as it doesnt affect the running of the car but just how a person perceives the temperatures and obviously this is a factor when buying or selling if people arent familiar with the trait. Maybe they changed thermostat housings along the production run as there seems be lots of varieties but I've just stuck lucky with this one being able to accept the sensor.

For something so simple I am honestly ashamed I didnt even notice the blanking plug, as I had a spare sensor that I bought earlier on last year. Have been told though that not all mk1 stat housings have this plug unfortunately
