Dont think you can if thats the case you need a VGA cable.
May be able to stream the laptop thought an xbox or something using windows media centre but thats only for certain things.

hdmi or if your tv has got it one of the multi pin things
i used to be able to connect mine to the tv, although now, with the hdmi cable connected, the loading screens appear on the tv, then as soon as it gets to the log in part, it only shows a pic on the lap top.

You on windows 7 or vista?
Press windows key and then search projector, select extend/duplicate/projector only etc.

Laptop should come with either VGA or HDMI port, if your TV has either, just plug it in and dont forget to enable the second monitor in the display manager

If you've got an lcd tv as mentioned you will need a VGA connector, also a 3.5 mm to phono connector if you're wanting sound through the tv too.
I repaired laptops for over 10 years and I'm yet to see one without a VGA port its as standard a port as a steering wheel is on a car!

^ this. I have seen one or two that only have s-video output though. You need to find out if you have a vga/hdmi/s-video/rca video out. If you really don't have any of those (unlikely) you can get a usb to vga box that will act as a simple monitor output. This will give you a standard vga output that you can sling through various adaptors to get the signal you need to drive the tv.
