going to sound like a k**b but...

don't buy a laptop.

invest in a decent computer, okay so it wont be portable, but sometimes over half the price for better performance, larger screen etc

then with the remaining money.. to solve the portability problem

buy a top of the range smart phone/pda. do what you need to in uni with them and sync it to the pc when your home to either edit or whatever your needs be

as already mentioned go with openoffice.

please don't forget to make sure you have whats needed to make backups of your assignements, external hard drive, dvd and pen drive.

I dont really have room for a desk computer :/ i already have a iPhone 3GS.
