Beta is a release of something to 'test' the water. You usually see it on software, basically you are ment to report errors to the developers so they can fix before shipping out the software.
Really not sure why they do it with games, well from what i can remember COD4, COD5 and Halo have been the only ones on the xbox. I think its all just hype to get people gagging for more and seeing how egar people can be to actually get a beta code. If all the other games can go without then why cant these.
