No,i just connected it straight to my modem.seemed to pick it up.The light on the back was flashing and set up alright,just when it got to the test connectiong part it failed to pick up the ip address because it had timed out.

You will probably have to set up a static ip address if the ps3 is connected with a cable.

Mine is connected wireless and i have not encountered a problem.

It sounds to me like you have connected your PS3 to a modem that you got from your ISP,is that correct?
Most of them are USB modems and whilst you might be able to connect the PS3 to it without being able to configure the modem it is never going to work.
If it is a USB modem you need to install drivers on your PC for the two to talk,if you just connect your PS3 to the modem nothing is going to happen.
If you get a modem/router you connect it to your PC to enter the settings for you ISP so it is configured and then you just connect your PS3 to it.
Not having a static IP address isn't the problem as I dont have a static one and my PS3 works fine.
