Default VTS Crank movement. side-to-side.

Right, I have just split down my vts lump and upon messing around with it i noticed there's movement side-to-side on the crank.

From the cam-belt side to the flywheel i can pull/push it ever so slightly, enough to make it knock.

Now usually knocking in an engine is bad news.

Should i be worried? or is it time for a new crank and new bearings. it is 1mm-2mm movement. no up or down movement however.

Also upon inspecting the bores, I can still see very easily the cross hatching thats carried out when there either honed or first machined. Is this a good indicator of having a healthy engine? i know in motorcycle engines it is.

what year is your engine- ive stripped a few later 8v lumps and about 5-8mm end float seemed common

i cant say its normal or good for it, as all ive ever been taught points against that..but ive ran boost on 2 lumps like that and theyve been fine.

ive just rebuilt my j4 bottom end with all new bearings shells and new thrust washers, and ive still got a few mm movement side to side so i wouldnt worry about it.

i always thought it had to move side to side a few mm anyway

Ah right awesome, well seeing as the engine is out, ill replace the shells etc as its easier to do now rather than later.

Its an 02 lump with unknown mileage, seems in very good condition though

Looking up some tech stuff for the engines, end float should be about 0.25mm max lol dunno if it would ever be near that in practice.

8mm may have been a bit ott but 2-4/5 I e defo seen like, if you got as much as 8 it would defo be fudged lol

But as said from the ones I've stripped the end float on the 98ps 8 valves always seemed excessive to me

5to8mm !!!
Ive told you a million times not to exagerate LOL

5mm may be acceptable on a crank, for a fucking ship!

Have you actually measured the end float? guessing 1-2mm is some going!

I did say 8mm may be a bit ott can imagine 8mm would sound like a tractor if it ran! Lol

But yeah I've measure a couple they've had a bit tbh, I may still have one actually.. If I've got a flywheel I can put on I'll check it later
