Default DVD ripping

OK, im trying to back up my collection of DVDs onto Hard disk.

Not overly worried about size but Im not going for lossless quality either.

Mpeg4 H264 seems pretty good conversion format as does DivX, but thats not the question.

Ive trialed 12 different video ripping programs now from Aimersoft, dvdshrink, dvd clone, etc, etc, and they are all inadequate. Currently Im using ImTOO.

The problem is most of them are aimed at the american market so they give you NTSC resolution (704*576) instead of PAL (720*576) no good for our DVDs!

Secondly they either read your disk giving you resolution info, frame rate and which video file is the main film, or they seem to give you decent ripping options, but never together in one package.

Thirdly once you do rip you find that though the DVD was cut at 720*576, the director chose some bloody random anamorphic format of widescreen and two thirds of your sodding screen is black background!

So for the serious experts out there among you HHHHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPP MMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEE!!!

Why do you want to back them up as rips? Makes no sense.

Just keep the DVD images on your PC as your backup, then whenever you want to rip it for a device just use something like handbrake.

Setting up a HTPC so I want the films accessible from the hard drive. Has to be DVD quality and I dont want all the extra associated rubbish like extras and other language soundtracks.

Download RipIt4Me
and you might also need DVDDecrypter.

Open RipIt4Me, click 1 click mode.
Then you can choose Full Disc/Movie Only, which audio stream you want, where to save.

Click next - wait 20/30 mins.

Done.

DVD Quality, no changes to video at all - exactly how it came from DVD. No menus/extras (unless specified). Then MCE should be able to play it no problem from that - just do the DVD Gallery mod thing for MCE and point it to the right folder.

Re-reading your first post again - a lot of the programs you've tried seem to be re-encoders to some degree. What you're after is a pure ripping program - preferably with options to choose what to rip/what not to - but making the rip identical to the original DVD.

See my post above
